What is trauma?

Trauma can be a complex and often misunderstood concept. In simple terms, trauma refers to the psychological response to one or more highly distressing or overwhelming events. Importantly, trauma isn’t limited to major, life-changing incidents. Smaller events or repeated experiences can also be traumatic. What feels deeply distressing varies from one person to another.

Experiencing trauma can lead to intense emotions such as fear, worry or helplessness. It can also cause heightened alertness, hypervigilance or even numbness. Trauma can affect how people think, feel, behave and relate to others, often impacting emotional well-being and relationships.

How do I work with people who have experienced trauma?

I understand the lasting impact trauma can have and I therefore carefully create an approach and environment designed to avoid re-traumatisation.

I prioritise safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment, which are the key needs that trauma may have compromised. Together in therapy, we explore your trauma experiences and their ongoing effects with the goal of reducing distress and helping you regain control and resilience.
